Kamada: It’s time for “Catch The Rainbow” corner, where the Kitakami International Association touches base with all kinds of happenings. During this time, we usually speak in the studio with Keiko Usugi, but today is part of a 3 day weekend in which she’s gone out somewhere!

Tada:Yeah, out and about!

Kamada: It seems she’s having some kind of fun…!

Tada: About the town.

Kamada: So, let’s give her a shout!

Kamada & Tada: (on the phone) Ms. Usugi!!

Keiko: Yep, hello!

Kamada: Whereabouts are you right now?

Keiko: Well, in Hokkaido…

Tada: Huh?!

Keiko: Have you heard of “Shimukappu?”

Tada: Shimukappu– just by name.

Keiko: Shimukappu is written with “Uranau” and the “Kan” from “Kanmuri.”

Tada: Ah, that’s right.

Keiko: Yes, we’re in Shimukappu at and around the Tomamu Ski Resort.

Tada: Wow.

Tada: How’s the weather? (Keiko doesn’t hear this)

Keiko: On the 6th, Friday night, we took the ferry from Hachinohe to Tomakomai, rented a car and drove from Tomakomai. There were actually eight of us, but this morning two went home, so now we’re a group of 6. Every one of them is really a top notch skier. In Kitakami, there is a group called the “Kitakami Ski Lovers,” which usually meets in Geto, but sometimes they organize ski camps in places like Niseko or Zao…

Kamada: Really??

Keiko: Yep. This time, we’re hitting Furano Ski Resort, Tomamu Ski Resort, and this morning we went to one called Sahoro.

Kamada: Wow! You’re totally into it! I’m jealous!

Keiko: Every one of us is really going all out skiing, we really did great as a group. Within the group– which has been going for about 70 years now– there’s a guy who’s like the leader, Mr. Shunsuke Takahashi. I’m with him right now. He really absolutely goes above and beyond. So I’m going to put him on– one moment.

Kamada: OK!

[6:56]

Takahashi: Uh, I’m the group vice-president Takahashi Shunsuke! I’m popping onto the phone to stand in for the president, Mr. Manabe!

Kamada: Thanks for being here!

Tada: Thanks!

Takahashi: Glad to be here.

Kamada: What’s your ski experience like?

Takahashi: Hm?

Kamada: What’s your ski experience like?

Takahashi: Well, I’ve been at it since grade school, and I’m over 70 now, so at least 60 years, I guess.

Tada: Oh my! Back when they used bamboo skis!

Takahashi: Haha… I guess that’s so.

Tada: How’s the weather out there?

Takahashi: Partly cloudy right now.

Kamada & Tada: Hmmm!

Tada: Sounds nice. What time will you be skiing until?

Takahashi: Pardon?

Tada: Around what time do you plan to ski until?

Takahashi: Oh, we skiied until about 2.

Tada: Until 8PM?? (He didn’t seem to hear it)

Takahashi: We skiied until 2PM.

Tada: Oh, right.

Takahashi: Since about 9am.

Kamada: They’ve stopped for the day and are in transit– they pulled over to give us a call!

Tada: I’m envious.

Kamada: Me too, I think there’s a lot of ways you’ll enjoy skiing, but what’s the best situation to you? First thing in the morning or hitting the slopes at night?

Takahashi: No doubt, the morning’s fresh snow is the best!

Kamada: I bet!

Takahashi: The powder is great.

Tada: Seriously…

Kamada: I’d like to join “Kitakami Ski Lovers!” I want to be a part of it!

Takahashi: Please do! Membership is free, after all.

Kamada: Is that so?? Well, I’ll poke my head in!

Takahashi: Aboslutely, please do.

~~

Keiko: Hello? (passing the phone)

Kamada: Yeah, hello!

~~

Igarashi: Hello, My name is Igarashi.

Kamada: Mr. Igarashi, thank you!

Tada: Aren’t you tired?

Igarashi: Yeah, I’m tired, but it felt great to ski so much.

Tada: Nice!

[5:13]

Kamada: Obviously, we have great slopes here in Iwate, but listening to the places you’ve gone to– Tomamu, Furano…

Igarashi: Yeah, we’re always at Geto, every week– but Hokkaido is obviously colder…

Kamada: Is the snow pretty packed?

Igarashi: Iwate didn’t get much snow this year, but there’s plenty here.

Tada: Really!

Igarashi: I’m pretty sure it’s less than an average year, though.

Kamada: That’s right, huh. We’re pretty short on snow nationwide, but I guess where you are is still more snow than Geto.

Igarashi: That’s right. The view is pure white.

Kamada: Pure white, really?? Did you eat anything tasty?

Igarashi: I ate lots of delicious things.

[6:01]

Kamada: Ahh. Are you planning to go anywhere to eat after this, by chance?

Igarashi: We haven’t really decided on our plans yet.

Kamada: I guess you’ll make a decision after this!

Igarashi: Yes, that’s right.

Kamada: Well, make sure you return home safely so that I can join you sometime!

Tada: That’s right.

Igarashi: OK.

Kamada: Thanks for everything!

Keiko: Hello?

Kamada: Hello~

Usugi: Everyone here is really great at skiing!

Tada: Seems so.

Keiko: They’re amazing!

Kamada: How Just how skilled are they? Do they have a certification or license or anything?

Keiko: More than that.

Kamada: What! More skilled than that?? Amazing!

Keiko: Yep.

Kamada: Wow. The way you can have a fulfilling break like that, it sounds so fun!

Keiko: Yes, I’m really grateful.

Kamada: I bet you’re really thankful.

Keiko: Kitakami has some incredible slopes, so thanks to that, I was able to make these kinds of friends.

[10:50]

Kamada: I kind of want to be a part of that!

Keiko: Just one thing from the International Assembly Hall. On February 24th– that’s a Saturday– while it’s still a bit early, we’re going to hold an emergency preparedness workshop aimed at foreign residents. It will be held at the fire station, and we’ll do things like learning the difference between flood response and earthquake response; the difference between “one hour” shelters and long-term shelters; making sandbags and cooking without fire or electricity, etcetera. We’d love it if word was spread about this workshop to our neighboring foreign residents.

Kamada: Saturday, February 24th. What time will the fire station be doing this?

Keiko: We’re planning on 10 AM, but with all those activities– making sandbags and such takes quite a while– perhaps 9:30 AM. We’re still working out the details.

Kamada: Well, then we’ll talk to you about it next week!

Keiko: Yeah, I’d love to discussing it next week.

Kamada: Thank you!

Keiko: See you then!

Kamada: Thanks so much.

Tada: Thank you so much.

Kamada: Looking forward to seeing you next week!

Tada: Have a safe trip home.

Keiko: Thank you!

Kamada: Thank you!
